BJP and Congress trade barbs as Rajagopalachari’s bust unveiled at Rashtrapati Bhavan

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed support for the unveiling of a bust of C Rajagopalachari at Rashtrapati Bhavan, marking a symbolic shift in how India honours its historical figures.

The move has sparked political reactions, including criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) aimed at Indian National Congress.

The bust of Rajagopalachari, popularly known as Rajaji and the first and only Indian Governor-General of independent India, was unveiled in the central courtyard of Rashtrapati Bhavan by Droupadi Murmu on Feb 23, replacing a former bust of British architect Edwin Lutyens.

The decision is part of broader steps described by officials as “shedding the vestiges of a colonial mindset” and celebrating India’s cultural heritage.

Tharoor welcomed the unveiling on social media platform X, praising the honouring of Rajaji and highlighting his legacy. In his post, Tharoor said he admired Rajaji’s liberal economics, support for free enterprise and values that were “without communal bigotry.” “It is sad that there are so few left to follow him today,” part of his message read, reflecting his view that Rajaji’s ideals remain relevant.

Rajaji was an eminent statesman whose contributions spanned India’s freedom struggle and early years of independence. His philosophies combined advocacy for economic freedom, social justice and constitutional rights — positions that Tharoor highlighted as part of his appreciation for the tribute.

Responding to Tharoor’s endorsement, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla criticised sections of the Congress party on X, accusing them of placing “Lutyens above Rajaji, Videshi above Swadeshi, Colonial above Bharatiya.”

His remarks suggested that differing views on the bust’s replacement exposed divisions within the Congress and the broader opposition INDIA bloc over how to approach India’s historical legacy and national symbols.

Poonawalla also referenced criticism from leaders such as Iltija Mufti, who reacted to a post by Lutyens’ great-grandson expressing disappointment at the removal of the architect’s bust. That thread of response highlighted contrasting perspectives on whether dismantling colonial symbols helps India engage with its history.

The installation of Rajaji’s bust, placed near the Grand Open Staircase opposite the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, is seen as a gesture towards recognising Indian leadership in the country’s historical narrative.

As part of the continuing Rajaji Utsav celebrations, the Rashtrapati Bhavan has opened exhibitions showcasing his life and contributions.
