A passenger bus carrying at least 40 fell into the Padma River while attempting to board a ferry in Rajbari district, triggering a massive rescue operation as authorities search for missing passengers.

At least 23 people have died after a passenger bus plunged into the Padma River in Rajbari, Bangladesh, while attempting to board a ferry, according to reports.
The incident occurred on March 25 evening at the Dauladia ferry terminal when the bus, carrying around 40 to 50 passengers, lost control and fell into the river. Initial reports suggest the driver was unable to manoeuvre the vehicle as it approached the ferry.

Rescue teams, including fire service divers, police, and coast guard personnel, were immediately deployed to the site. Authorities worked through the night to locate survivors and recover bodies, with operations hampered by strong currents and low visibility.
Several passengers reportedly managed to swim to safety or were rescued shortly after the accident, but many remained trapped inside the submerged vehicle. The bus was later retrieved from the river after hours of effort using specialised rescue equipment.
Officials said the passengers were believed to be travelling toward Dhaka, many returning after Eid holidays, when the accident took place. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as the bus quickly sank, leaving bystanders unable to intervene.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident, with early indications pointing to loss of control during the boarding process.
