A gunman opened fire at an adult education center, killing at least 10 people, as authorities investigate the motive and assess the number of wounded.
In the worst mass shooting in Sweden’s history, at least 10 people died at an adult education center west of Stockholm after a gunman open fired at the school premises on Feb 4.
The gunman is believed to have been among those who are dead as officials warned that the death toll could rise.
As of Feb 5, the motive of the gunman and the number of wounded have not been ascertained yet.
Campus Risbergska, the school where the unfortunate incident took place, offers primary and secondary education for adults aged 20 and older, Swedish-language courses for immigrants, vocational training, and specialized programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
According to the head of the city’s police district Roberto Eid Forest, several people were injured after a gunman opened fire at an education campus in the city.
The police said that the gunman acted alone in the shootout. Forest also said that the attacker wasn’t known to police before the shootout and had no connection to a gang.
“We’re working with secret services but as far as I know, it’s a person unknown to police,” he was quoted as saying.
Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer called the shooting “an event that shakes our entire society to its core.”
“Today, we have witnessed brutal, deadly violence against completely innocent people,” Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson told reporters in Stockholm late on Feb 4.
“This is the worst mass shooting in Swedish history. Many questions remain unanswered, and I cannot provide those answers either,” he said.
“But the time will come when we will know what happened, how it could occur, and what motives may have been behind it. Let us not speculate,” the prime minister added.
Although gun violence at schools rarely happen in Sweden, people have been wounded or killed with other weapons such as knives or axes in several incidents in recent years.
