Andhra-born Gopi Thotakura becomes India's first space tourist

Gopi Thotakura, an entrepreneur and pilot becomes India's first space tourist.

In a historic moment for India’s space exploration endeavors, Gopi Thotakura, an accomplished entrepreneur and pilot, has achieved the feat of becoming the first Indian space tourist and the second Indian to venture into space after the Indian Army's Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma in 1984.

Thotakura went as part of six crew members for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin's NS-25 mission on Sunday, which was its seventh human spaceflight and the 25th flight for the New Shepard program.

New Shepard is Blue Origin's fully reusable, suborbital rocket system built for human flight from the beginning. Till today, the program has flown 31 humans above the Karman line, the proposed conventional boundary between Earth's atmosphere and outer space.

Thotakura’s participation in the NS-25 mission gives a glimpse into the future of recreational space travel. With sub-orbital spacecraft like the NS-25 mission, passengers can afford a brief yet awe-inspiring experience in outer space, redefining the possibilities of human spaceflight.

Besides Gopi Thotakura, the astronaut crew included Mason Angel, Sylvain Chiron, Kenneth L. Hess, Carol Schaller, and former Air Force Captain Ed Dwight, who was selected by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 as the nation's first black astronaut candidate but never had the opportunity to fly, the official website of Blue Origin stated.

Bezos’ Blue Origin is at the forefront of space tourism industry with an aim to take passengers beyond the Karman Line, which is approximately 100kms above Earth’s surface where the travellers can experience few minutes in outer space before returning to Earth.

While the space tourism has its own sets of challenges such as high costs and environmental concerns, the thrill of space exploration never ceases to captivate individuals like Thotakura.

The industry’s expected growth from a market value of $842.28 million in 2023 to an estimated $27,861.99 million by 2032, shows underscores the evolving landscape of space travel.
