The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully conducted the second integrated air drop test for its Gaganyaan mission at Sriharikota, marking another step forward in preparations for India’s first human spaceflight programme.
The test was aimed at validating the performance of critical systems involved in the safe recovery of astronauts, particularly under simulated emergency conditions. It involved dropping a test module from an aircraft to assess the functioning of parachute deployment mechanisms and related recovery systems.

According to ISRO, the integrated air drop test is designed to evaluate the sequence of events that would take place during a crew module’s descent and landing. This includes the deployment of parachutes at various stages to ensure a controlled and safe splashdown.
The test is part of a series of qualification exercises being conducted to ensure that all safety mechanisms meet mission requirements. The space agency has been carrying out multiple tests to validate the crew escape system, recovery operations, and overall reliability of the Gaganyaan mission architecture.
In the latest test, the systems performed as expected, demonstrating the effectiveness of the parachute-based deceleration and recovery sequence. Such tests are critical to ensuring that astronauts can be safely brought back to Earth in case of contingencies during the mission.
The Gaganyaan programme aims to send Indian astronauts, known as “Gagannauts,” into low-Earth orbit and return them safely. It represents a major milestone in India’s space ambitions and involves the development of human-rated launch vehicles, life support systems, and crew safety technologies.
ISRO has been progressively advancing through different stages of testing, including pad abort tests and crew escape demonstrations, to validate emergency response capabilities. The integrated air drop tests form a crucial part of this framework, focusing specifically on the descent and recovery phase of the mission.
Sriharikota, which houses the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, continues to serve as the primary launch and testing site for ISRO’s major missions, including Gaganyaan. The facility has been central to the development and execution of India’s space programmes.
Officials have indicated that further tests will be conducted to refine systems and ensure readiness before the eventual human spaceflight. The Gaganyaan mission timeline depends on the successful completion of these validation exercises.
The successful execution of the second integrated air drop test adds to ISRO’s ongoing efforts to build a robust and reliable human spaceflight capability, with safety remaining a primary focus at every stage of development.
