NASA astronaut Sunita Williams has confirmed her upcoming visit to India, expressing enthusiasm about engaging with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) team and celebrating the country’s growing space ambitions.

Speaking at NASA’s SpaceX Crew-9 Post-Flight News Conference after returning from a nine-month space mission, Williams reflected on her admiration for India’s landscape and its advancements in space exploration.

“India is amazing. Every time we flew over the Himalayas, we captured incredible images. The sight was breathtaking, resembling a ripple effect caused by the collision of tectonic plates,” she remarked, offering a glimpse of Earth’s beauty from space.

Williams, whose father, Deepak Pandya, hails from Gujarat, emphasized her strong connection to India and her eagerness to witness its progress firsthand.

“I hope and I think for sure that I’ll be going back to my father’s home country. I look forward to engaging with the people and celebrating the upcoming Indian astronauts participating in ISRO’s mission,” she said.

Praising India’s strides in space, Williams highlighted the nation’s growing presence on the global stage. “It’s incredible to see India making its mark in space. They’ll soon have their own astronaut representing them on the International Space Station, and I’d love to share experiences and support their journey,” she noted.

In a lighthearted moment, when asked whether her fellow crew members would accompany her to India, Williams responded with a chuckle, “Absolutely! You might stand out a little, but don’t worry —we’ll get you all prepped with some spicy food.”

Reflecting on India’s rich diversity from a vantage point in space, Williams described the transition from the Himalayas to the bustling coastline of Gujarat and Mumbai as breathtaking.

“Flying over India, you see an incredible transition—from the towering Himalayas to the vibrant cultures of the East, down to the fishing fleets off the coast of Gujarat and Mumbai that almost signal a beacon of arrival.”

Her visit comes at a pivotal time as India advances its human spaceflight program. With ISRO preparing to send its first astronauts to space, Williams’s presence is expected to strengthen collaboration between NASA and ISRO while inspiring the next generation of Indian space enthusiasts.
