The AI Samarth program, designed for Classes 6 to 10, will teach students ethical, safe, and practical AI use, with content developed in collaboration with IIT Madras.
Classrooms in Delhi are about to take a major step into the future, as schools prepare to introduce artificial intelligence education for students from Classes 6 to 10 starting May 8.
The initiative, titled AI Samarth, is designed to promote AI literacy among students aged 11 to 14 and is being launched by the Central Square Foundation (CSF) in partnership with the Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI at IIT Madras.
Rather than just teaching the basics of how AI works, AI Samarth aims to help students understand how to use it responsibly, ethically, and meaningfully in their lives.
The curriculum will include modules that cover key AI concepts, its everyday applications—from social media to smart devices—and promote safe digital practices.
Beyond technical understanding, the program emphasizes real-world awareness, offering insights into ethics, bias, privacy, and the broader consequences of AI use.
Students will explore both the opportunities and risks associated with emerging technologies, equipping them to be informed and responsible digital citizens.
Teachers are also a central part of the rollout. To support them, the program provides an open-source library of educational materials and training modules available online in five languages—Hindi, English, Marathi, Bengali, and Odia.
More regional languages will be added over the coming months to make the resources more accessible nationwide.
What sets AI Samarth apart is its flexible structure. Schools can adapt the curriculum to suit their own teaching environments, whether they have high-end tech infrastructure or are at the early stages of digital adoption.
According to CSF, “The curriculum framework supports the development of a flexible, holistic curriculum designed to cater to diverse learning levels, allowing institutions to customize its depth and breadth based on local contexts, grade levels, institutional goals, and the varying readiness of students and teachers in terms of their awareness, understanding, and use of AI.”
This initiative is part of a wider national effort to bring AI education into mainstream learning and nurture 21st-century skills among students.
With technical input from IIT Madras and implementation support from CSF, the AI Samarth framework could serve as a template for other states seeking to modernize their school systems.
