Users can now switch their Gmail address without losing mails as Google pairs the update with AI-powered inbox tools.

In a major shift for one of the world’s most widely used email platforms, Google has introduced the ability for users to change their Gmail address without losing existing emails, marking a long-awaited upgrade to account flexibility.
The feature, which had been in development since late last year, is now being rolled out to users in phases. Announcing the update, Google CEO Sundar Pichai struck a nostalgic note, saying while Gmail debuted in 2004, users no longer need to be tied to email IDs created decades ago.

“2004 was a good year, but your Gmail address doesn't need to be stuck in it,” Pichai wrote on X, underscoring the shift toward modernizing digital identities.
With the new feature, users can head to their Google Account settings and select a new available Gmail address—without needing to create a new account or migrate data. This eliminates the long-standing inconvenience of abandoning old inboxes or maintaining multiple accounts.
Pichai added that users can finally move on from outdated or awkward email handles, opting instead for something more current and professional.
Importantly, Google has ensured continuity. Once a Gmail address is changed:
This ensures a seamless transition without the risk of losing contacts, messages, or access.
However, the feature is currently available only to select users, with a wider rollout expected over time.
Alongside this update, Google is expanding its AI capabilities within Gmail through its Gemini-powered features.
The new “AI Inbox” is designed to prioritise important emails and reduce clutter. It introduces smart sections like:
These features are powered by Gemini, which already offers email summarisation capabilities within Gmail.
For now, the AI Inbox is being tested with select users in the United States, indicating a phased global rollout strategy.
With the ability to change Gmail IDs and the integration of AI-driven inbox management, Google is moving to redefine how users manage both their identity and communication—making email more adaptable, personalized, and intelligent.
