China launches three astronauts for Tiangong mission, including first female spaceflight engineer

As part of the Asian powerhouse's ambitious space program, China launched three astronauts—including a woman—into space early on Oct 30 for a six-month trip to the Tiangong space station. This is the 14th crewed space mission for the nation.

Using a Long March-2F rocket, the Shenzhou-19 spacecraft launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Inner Mongolia at 4:27 am (local time).

In addition to two rookie astronauts, Song Lingdong, 34, a former air force pilot, and Wang Haoze, 34, a spaceflight engineer and China's third female astronaut, the crew includes Commander Cai Xuzhe, 48, who was a member of the Shenzhou 14 mission. Wang is the first female spaceflight engineer in the nation.

Notably, Song and Wang are the youngest crew members China has sent into space; they were both born in the 1990s. Wang is currently the sole female spaceflight engineer in China; her participation is very noteworthy.

Following in the footsteps of Liu Yang and Wang Yaping, she will become the third Chinese woman to set out on a crewed spaceflight mission.

Wang was a senior engineer at the Academy of Aerospace Propulsion Technology before joining the astronaut program, where she helped create rocket engines that ran on nuclear power.

Ye Guangfu, Li Cong, and Li Guangsu, who have been aboard the space station since April 25, are expected to return to Earth on Nov 3 at the Dongfeng Landing Site. They will be replaced by the next crew.

During their six months aboard the Tiangong space station, Cai, Song, and Wang will carry out a variety of experiments and activities.

Space life science, basic physics of microgravity, space material science, and space medicine are among the 86 scientific experiments on the mission that focus on biological and physical sciences in space.

The astronauts will carry out several duties while they are there, such as conducting spacewalks, overseeing station operations, and installing devices to protect against space debris.

With plans to extend it with new modules and open it to commercial activity, the Tiangong space station, which was constructed entirely by China, is expected to be permanently manned and operating for at least ten years.

The eighth visit to the Tiangong space station by the Shenzhou-19 mission demonstrates the nation's expanding capacity for space exploration and study.

With several experiments planned during their stay on the Tiangong station, the crew is anticipated to return to Earth in late April or early May 2025, capping a mission that will enhance China's space program and advance scientific knowledge.
