New Zealand’s dynamic wicketkeeper-batter steps in as Bethell departs for England duty ahead of crucial playoff fixtures.
In a strategic late-season shuffle, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have roped in New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert as a replacement for England’s Jacob Bethell, who will exit the IPL 2025 just ahead of the playoff stage due to national commitments.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the change on Thursday, stating that Seifert’s inclusion will take effect from May 24, a day after RCB’s league-stage clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 23.
The 29-year-old Seifert, known for his aggressive top-order batting, brings with him international experience, having scored 1,540 runs in 66 T20Is for New Zealand. However, his exposure to the IPL has been limited, featuring in just three matches, last appearing in 2022. Seifert joins the RCB squad for a reported fee of ₹2 crore.
“Jacob Bethell is set to leave the TATA IPL 2025 for England on May 24 to join the national team,” the BCCI noted in its official release. “Tim Seifert has been signed by RCB to bolster their squad ahead of the high-stakes playoff phase.”
Bethell’s final appearance in red and gold will be against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday, with RCB wrapping up their league campaign versus Lucknow Super Giants on May 27.
Meanwhile, RCB isn’t the only team impacted by international call-ups. Jos Buttler, representing Gujarat Titans, will also skip the playoffs to honor England’s home series commitment against the West Indies. Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans, and Mumbai Indians have also secured playoff berths and could face similar squad disruptions.
With the knockout rounds approaching and international duty pulling stars away, the race for the IPL crown promises not just fierce competition — but some unpredictable twists.
