Tilak’s unbeaten 101 powers MI to 199 before Bumrah and Ashwani rip through GT for 100, sealing a crushing 99-run win and reigniting the campaign.
Tilak Varma produced an innings of rare class and timing as Mumbai Indians stormed back into IPL 2026 contention with a commanding 99-run victory over Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.
On a night when Mumbai desperately needed inspiration, Tilak delivered it in spectacular fashion. His unbeaten 101 off just 45 balls transformed a drifting innings into a statement performance, helping Mumbai post 199 for 5 before their bowlers dismantled Gujarat for just 100.

The emphatic win ended Mumbai’s losing streak, lifted them to seventh in the points table, and handed a timely boost to their net run rate (+0.067).
In a dramatic twist, Gujarat’s total finished one run short of Tilak’s century effort.
Chasing 200 for victory, Gujarat Titans were rocked immediately as Jasprit Bumrah struck with the very first ball of the innings.
Sai Sudharsan mistimed a drive straight to cover point, ending Bumrah’s wicket drought after 153 IPL deliveries without success. It was the breakthrough Mumbai had craved.
Hardik Pandya then made another incision, trapping Jos Buttler lbw after a successful review showed the ball clipping leg stump.
Ashwani Kumar piled on the pressure by dismissing Shubman Gill, who miscued a pull shot to deep square. At 40 for 3 in 4.4 overs, Gujarat were already sinking.
For the first time this season, Gujarat’s feared top three — Gill, Sudharsan and Buttler — were all back in the pavilion inside the powerplay.
Mumbai never allowed Gujarat to recover.
Naman Dhir produced one of the moments of the match with a superb running catch near the boundary to dismiss Washington Sundar off Mitchell Santner.
Santner then removed Glenn Phillips yet again, the third time he has dismissed the batter, leaving Gujarat reeling at 55 for 5.
Ashwani returned to send back Rahul Tewatia before tearing through the lower order to finish with outstanding figures of 4 for 24.
There was little fight from Gujarat’s middle order, with Rahul Tewatia and Shahrukh Khan managing just 25 runs from 24 deliveries between them, exposing concerns in the side’s batting depth.
Gujarat were eventually bowled out in 15.5 overs, suffering one of their heaviest defeats.
Earlier, Mumbai’s innings had looked in trouble.
At 103 for 4 after 14 overs, they were searching for momentum. Tilak himself was struggling on 19 off 22 balls, and Gujarat’s bowlers appeared in control after Kagiso Rabada’s fiery opening burst rattled the top order.
Then came the turning point.
During the strategic time-out, skipper Hardik Pandya was seen urging Tilak to accelerate. What followed was breathtaking.
Tilak returned with renewed intent, unleashing a brutal counterattack that stunned Gujarat. Prasidh Krishna was hammered for 19 in one over, while Ashok Sharma leaked 26 in another.
The boundaries flowed effortlessly as Tilak found gaps, cleared ropes, and seized complete command.
Mumbai plundered 99 runs in the final six overs, with Tilak scoring 82 of those from just 23 balls after his slow start.
Tilak reached his maiden IPL century off the final delivery of the innings, equalling the fastest hundred for Mumbai Indians alongside Sanath Jayasuriya.
He finished unbeaten on 101, smashing eight fours and seven sixes in a knock that could redefine Mumbai’s season.
Hardik’s modest 15 off 16 still played a role, anchoring an 81-run partnership off 38 balls that allowed Tilak to dominate the finish.
Mumbai Indians now return home to face Chennai Super Kings on April 23.
Gujarat Titans travel south for a major clash against defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 24.
