Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin retires from the Indian Premier League after a stellar 16-season career, leaving behind a legacy of innovation, strategic bowling, and championship-winning performances, while exploring opportunities in global cricket leagues.

Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), concluding a distinguished 16-season career.
He made this announcement on Aug 27 via social media, stating that while his time in the IPL has ended, he is eager to explore opportunities in various cricket leagues around the world.

Ashwin's IPL journey began in 2009 with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), where he made a significant impact with his innovative bowling techniques, including the carrom ball. Over the years, he represented several franchises, including the Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals. In 2025, he returned to CSK, his home franchise, for what would be his final IPL season.
Throughout his IPL career, Ashwin played 221 matches, taking 187 wickets at an average of 30.22, with best bowling figures of 4/34. He is the fourth-highest wicket-taker in the history of the tournament.

In his retirement announcement, Ashwin expressed gratitude towards the IPL and its franchises for providing him with a platform to showcase his skills. He acknowledged the memories and relationships forged over the years and expressed excitement about the new chapter in his cricketing journey.
Having retired from international cricket in December 2024, Ashwin is now focusing on exploring cricket leagues outside India. He has already participated in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) with the Dindigul Dragons and expressed interest in engaging with other leagues globally .
Ashwin's retirement marks the end of an era in the IPL. Known for his strategic acumen and adaptability, he has been a pivotal figure in the league's history. His contributions to CSK's successes, including their back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011, have solidified his legacy as one of the tournament's greats .
