India opt for batting depth over bowling firepower in 5th Test ; Kuldeep, Bumrah, and Thakur miss out as Siraj leads revamped pace attack.

In a bold strategic shift for the fifth and final Test against England at The Oval starting July 31, India has opted to bolster its batting by including Karun Nair in the playing XI, replacing pace all-rounder Shardul Thakur. The decision signals a preference for stability in the middle order and a calculated gamble on a relatively raw pace unit, with senior spearhead Jasprit Bumrah rested as part of a strict workload management policy.
Bumrah, who was originally slotted for only three Tests in the series, was strongly considered for the Oval clash, especially with the series outcome hanging in the balance. But head coach Gautam Gambhir stood firm on the no-compromise stance on workload, backing the younger crop to deliver. Mohammed Siraj will lead the attack, joined by Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna — with the former coming off a career-defining 10-wicket haul in India’s only win so far at Birmingham.

Meanwhile, Dhruv Jurel replaces the injured Rishabh Pant behind the stumps, who has been ruled out due to a foot fracture.
Kuldeep benched again as India gamble on grass
Despite consistent calls for his inclusion, Kuldeep Yadav has once again been left out — the pitch’s green top tipping the balance in favor of pace. Arshdeep Singh also ends the tour without a game, as India field just three specialist bowlers — Siraj, Prasidh, and Akash Deep — backed by all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar.
The move to bring Karun Nair back into the fold underscores India’s concern over Shardul Thakur’s underwhelming performances, particularly with the ball in Manchester. Nair’s return raises questions around the No.3 spot, where both he and Sai Sudharsan have alternated throughout the series. With both expected in the XI, the team must now decide who occupies the crucial top-order position.
England miss Stokes; India’s five-bowler setup faces test
England have named their XI early, but will be without skipper Ben Stokes, who has been ruled out due to a shoulder injury. For India, the five-bowler combination — minus their most reliable weapon, Bumrah — means there’s little margin for error. Jadeja and Sundar will be key to balancing attack and containment.
As India chase a series-clinching win at The Oval, all eyes will be on how this rejigged line-up stands up to the challenge — and whether Nair’s return and Siraj’s leadership can script a decisive final act.
