Punjab Kings captain penalized after slow over-rate vs Chennai, but IPL’s revised rules spare him suspension as PBKS seal dominant 210 chase at Chepauk.

Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined ₹24 lakh after his side was found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate during their IPL 2026 clash against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The breach marks PBKS’ second offence of the season under the IPL Code of Conduct.
Under Article 2.22, the sanctions extended beyond the captain. The rest of the Playing XI, including Impact Player Priyansh Arya, were fined ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fees —whichever is lesser — adding financial sting to an otherwise emphatic night.

Despite this being Punjab’s second over-rate violation, Iyer will not face a suspension—even in the event of another breach. The reprieve stems from a key rule change introduced ahead of the 2025 season, which scrapped the earlier provision of a one-match ban for captains after three offences.
Instead, penalties are now restricted to fines and in-game field restrictions. However, the league has introduced a demerit points system aligned with ICC regulations. Points accrued from sanctions remain on record for 36 months, and their accumulation over time can still trigger suspensions—shifting the focus from immediate punishment to long-term discipline.
On the field, Punjab Kings delivered a commanding statement, chasing down a daunting 210-run target with remarkable ease. The tone was set early by Arya, whose explosive 39 off 11 balls ensured the required rate never spiraled.
Iyer then anchored the innings with a composed half-century, steering the chase with authority. The aggressive intent across the lineup left CSK’s bowlers with little room to recover, as pressure failed to build at any stage.
Despite early assistance from the surface, Chennai’s attack struggled to contain runs, allowing PBKS to cruise to victory in just 18.4 overs. The result not only underlined Punjab’s growing batting firepower but also deepened CSK’s concerns over their faltering run at home.
