Who is Abhishek Kumar? BJP's first-time candidate taking on Prashant Kishor in Bankipur

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named first-time candidate Abhishek Kumar for the July 30 Bankipur Assembly bypoll, setting up a keenly watched contest against Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor, who is also making his electoral debut.

The contest has quickly become one of the most closely watched by-elections in Bihar, with both candidates seeking to make a political statement beyond a single constituency.

While Prashant Kishor enters the fray as one of India's best-known political strategists attempting to translate years of electoral consulting into votes, Abhishek Kumar represents the BJP's organisational model—a leader who has spent more than two decades working through the party ranks before being entrusted with his first election.

A BJP worker with over two decades in the organisation

Abhishek Kumar is regarded as a close associate of Bihar BJP president Nitin Nabin, whose election to the Rajya Sabha vacated the Bankipur Assembly seat. Kumar has been associated with the BJP and its youth wing for nearly 26 years, beginning his political journey as a grassroots worker.

Over the years, he has held several organisational positions, including Mandal Secretary, Mandal General Secretary, Mandal President, President of the Patna Metropolitan unit of the BJP Yuva Morcha, and State Vice-President of the BJP Yuva Morcha in Bihar. Unlike many first-time candidates who enter politics from outside the party, Kumar's rise has come entirely through the BJP's organisational structure.

Why Bankipur matters

Bankipur is among the BJP's strongest urban constituencies in Bihar. The seat has been represented by Nitin Nabin since 2010 and has remained firmly in the party's column through successive Assembly elections.

In the 2025 Assembly election, Nabin retained the constituency with a margin of more than 51,000 votes before later moving to the Rajya Sabha, necessitating the bypoll.

The BJP's decision to field a relatively low-profile but experienced organisational worker reflects its confidence in the party's grassroots network in the constituency. At the same time, it signals that the election is likely to be fought as much on the strength of the organisation as on individual political stature.

A prestige battle for both sides

The bypoll has assumed significance because it pits two political newcomers with contrasting backgrounds against each other.

While Prashant Kishor has described the contest as a referendum on the BJP-led government and an opportunity to introduce a new political culture in Bihar, the BJP sees the election as a test of its organisational strength in a traditional stronghold.

The party has already deployed senior leaders to campaign in the constituency, underscoring the importance it attaches to retaining the seat amid the attention generated by Kishor's candidacy.

Polling for the Bankipur Assembly by-election is scheduled for July 30, while the counting of votes will take place on August 3. The outcome is expected to be closely watched not only for its immediate electoral implications but also for what it signals about the political trajectory of both the BJP and Jan Suraaj ahead of future contests in Bihar.
