TMC, Election Commission face off after heated meeting; Derek O’Brien alleges ‘get lost’ remark

A meeting between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Election Commission of India (ECI) escalated into a confrontation, with both sides presenting sharply differing accounts of what transpired.

The delegation, led by TMC MP Derek O'Brien, met Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in New Delhi to raise concerns related to election processes.

According to Derek, the meeting lasted only a few minutes and ended abruptly. He alleged that the Chief Election Commissioner told the delegation to “get lost,” describing the interaction as dismissive and inappropriate.

The TMC further claimed that the Commission had not responded to multiple letters previously sent by the party, and said the meeting failed to address their concerns.

In contrast, sources within the Election Commission presented a different version of events. Officials alleged that O’Brien behaved in a confrontational manner during the meeting, including raising his voice and interrupting proceedings.

According to these sources, the meeting lasted under 10 minutes and ended amid a tense exchange between the two sides.

The Commission also reportedly objected to the tone adopted by the TMC delegation, indicating that the discussion became difficult to continue due to disruptions.

Following the meeting, Derek criticised the conduct of the poll body, accusing it of bias and failing to engage with the opposition’s concerns. The TMC has maintained that it approached the Commission to seek redress on election-related issues but was not given a proper hearing.

The Election Commission, on its part, has not issued a detailed public statement addressing the specific allegations made by Derek. However, sources have reiterated that the delegation’s conduct contributed to the breakdown of the meeting.

The incident marks a fresh escalation in tensions between the TMC and the Election Commission, particularly in the context of ongoing electoral processes.

The confrontation also comes amid broader friction between opposition parties and the poll body over issues related to election management and oversight.
