Opposition MPs were detained during a march to the Election Commission over alleged voter roll manipulation in Bihar, leading to adjournments in both Houses, yet the government pushed through crucial legislation including revised Income Tax Bill.

The Monsoon Session of Parliament descended into chaos as top leaders from the INDIA bloc staged a protest march from Parliament to the Election Commission (EC), demanding accountability over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar.
The demonstration intensified existing political tensions and disrupted proceedings in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.

Protesters included high-profile politicians such as Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Mallikarjun Kharge, Sharad Pawar, and Akhilesh Yadav.
At least 300 MPs participated, chanting "vote chori" (vote theft) and raising slogans about "democratic assault." The march, which began from Parliament's Makar Dwar, was halted by Delhi Police near Transport Bhawan, with MPs, including Rahul and Priyanka, being detained. In a dramatic moment, Akhilesh Yadav was seen scaling a barricade to continue the march.
The protest seeks to expose what opposition has termed a “fight to protect the people’s right to vote,” accusing the Election Commission of acting under ideological bias and undercutting democratic norms.
As tensions escalated, Speaker Om Birla adjourned the Lok Sabha till 2 PM, while the Rajya Sabha followed suit. Emergency meetings were held across political lines, with demands for allowing MPs safe passage to the EC rejected by police citing no prior permission for the protest.
Despite the uproar, the government proceeded with its legislative agenda. When the Houses resumed, Lok Sabha quickly passed the National Sports Governance Bill, 2025 and the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025 by voice vote, even in the absence of many opposition members. The Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024 was also approved with minimal debate.
Mounting controversy and disruptions compelled Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to introduce a revised Income Tax Bill (Taxation Laws Amendment Bill, 2025). This updated draft reflects nearly all 285 recommendations from the Select Committee and was tabled amid the fray.
Simultaneously, Rajya Sabha cleared the Manipur GST (Amendment) Bill, 2025 and the Appropriation (No. 2) Bill, 2025, sustaining the pace of governance despite the political unrest.
The government's stance was summed up by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who said, “Enough is enough. While opposition parties have the right to protest, they cannot continuously block Parliamentary functions... We will not let it succeed.”
The Election Commission did agree to meet with opposition delegations, under controlled conditions with only 30 MPs being permitted to interact at 12 PM, provided their lists and vehicle details were submitted in advance. The agenda of the meeting remains undisclosed.
Observers consider the session a pivotal juncture in Indian parliamentary history—highlighting a collision between protest-driven opposition and the ruling party’s determination to push its legislative program. The SIR controversy threatens to disrupt future trust in electoral processes, while the introduction of updated tax, sports, and shipping laws ensures the government maintains legislative momentum.
