Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly attacked during a visit to violence-hit Sonarpur in West Bengal, prompting strong reactions from Mamata Banerjee and Opposition leaders, while the BJP rejected the allegations.

A fresh political controversy has erupted in West Bengal after Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee was allegedly attacked during a visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district.
Reacting to the incident, Trinamool Congress chief and former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee claimed her nephew "could have died" and accused political opponents of targeting him, while the BJP denied any role in the episode.

The incident took place when Abhishek Banerjee visited Sonarpur on May 30 to meet party workers affected by post-election violence following the TMC’s defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Videos from the scene showed crowds surrounding the TMC leader, shouting slogans, pushing him and allegedly throwing eggs, stones and other objects.
According to Abhishek Banerjee, he was struck near the eye by a brick during the confrontation. He described the incident as a “BJP-sponsored attack” and said video footage of the episode had been recorded. He also indicated that he would approach the court over the matter.
Reacting strongly, Mamata Banerjee alleged that her nephew could have lost his life in the attack and questioned the role of law enforcement authorities. She accused political opponents of creating a violent atmosphere and said those responsible should be held accountable.
The BJP, however, denied any involvement in the incident and dismissed the allegations made by the TMC. Party leaders claimed the attack reflected growing public anger against the Trinamool Congress rather than any organised action by the BJP. BJP Rajya Sabha MP Rahul Sinha said the incident was a sign of increasing resentment against the party among sections of the public.
Meanwhile Abhishek Banerjee maintained that the attack was pre-planned and said he would pursue legal action.
The alleged assault triggered reactions from several Opposition leaders across the country. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal were among those who condemned the attack and criticised political violence.
The incident comes amid heightened political tensions in West Bengal following the 2026 Assembly elections, which saw the BJP defeat the TMC and end the party’s 15-year rule in the state. Reports of post-poll violence and clashes between rival political groups have continued to emerge from several districts since the results were declared.
No official statement indicating arrests in connection with the Sonarpur incident had been reported at the time of publication.
