With a strategic push for a stronger political presence, JD(U) under Nitish Kumar's leadership, prepares to make significant strides in the J&K legislative assembly polls slated for 2024.
JDU supremo Nitish Kumar
The Janata Dal (United) (JDU), under the leadership of Nitish Kumar, is actively preparing for the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).
The party has announced its intention to contest in 40 constituencies within the union territory.
This decision comes as part of an expansion of their political footprint, which has been relatively limited in the region until now.
The anticipated elections, aiming to fill a 90-seat legislative assembly, are expected to take place before the end of September 2024.
It's been a significant gap since the last elections in 2014, which resulted in a coalition government formed by the BJP and PDP.
However, this alliance was short-lived, dissolving in June 2018.
GM Shaheen, the state president for JD(U), has expressed confidence in strengthening the party's presence under Kumar's guidance.
The party has been actively recruiting members and reorganizing at the grassroots level to build a robust foundation for their electoral campaign.
Despite facing competition from established parties like the National Conference, Congress, Peoples’ Democratic Party, and a well-entrenched BJP, JD(U) is optimistic about its prospects.
The party has previously elected in local governance elections and currently boasts over 100 sarpanchs and municipal committee members.
JD(U)'s history in Jammu and Kashmir has seen its challenges, with a decline post-2000 due to internal leadership issues.
However, there has been a resurgence in recent years, with concerted efforts to re-establish its influence.
The party's performance in these elections will be closely watched, especially given that the BJP has announced plans to contest all 90 seats.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah's recent visit to Jammu and Kashmir underscores the importance of these elections and the preparations underway by all political parties involved.
