After Abhishek Banerjee, TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee claims attack in Hooghly

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee on May 31 alleged that he was attacked by BJP supporters in West Bengal’s Hooghly district while visiting Chanditala Police Station to submit a memorandum related to post-poll violence and the arrest of party workers.

According to Kalyan Banerjee, he suffered injuries after being mobbed outside the police station. Videos circulating on social media showed the TMC leader holding his head and collapsing on the road amid a crowd. Reports said the incident occurred when he arrived in the area to raise concerns over alleged attacks on TMC workers following the Assembly elections.

The TMC accused BJP supporters of orchestrating the assault and described it as an attempt on the MP’s life. Party leaders alleged that the attack reflected the deteriorating political situation in the state following the elections.

The incident comes a day after TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee claimed he was attacked during a visit to Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district.

Abhishek Banerjee alleged that stones, eggs and other objects were thrown at him while he was meeting families affected by post-poll violence. He accused BJP-backed workers of carrying out a planned attack and said he would pursue legal action.

The BJP has denied allegations of involvement in the attacks and accused the TMC of attempting to politicise incidents of public unrest.

The party has maintained that growing public anger against the Trinamool Congress is responsible for the confrontations being witnessed in different parts of the state.

The developments come amid continuing reports of political clashes and violence in West Bengal following the 2026 Assembly elections, which resulted in the BJP coming to power in the state.

Both the BJP and the TMC have accused each other of intimidation, attacks and targeting of party workers since the results were declared.

Meanwhile, police have arrested five people in connection with the alleged attack on Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur, which took place a day before the incident involving Kalyan Banerjee.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee also alleged that police had pressured hospitals not to admit the party leader after the incident, a claim that has further intensified the political confrontation between the TMC and the BJP. Authorities have not publicly responded to the allegation.
