Clash triggered by dispute over event arrangements leaves neighbourhood tense; police deploy over 200 personnel to restore order.

Kolhapur was rocked by violence on August 22 night after a local football club celebration spiraled into a street battle between two groups, leaving at least 10 people injured and several vehicles torched.
The clash broke out in the Siddharthnagar area during an event marking the 31st anniversary of the Rajebagswar Football Club. Banners, sound systems and other arrangements for the programme had sparked resentment among local residents, who complained of inconvenience. What began as heated arguments soon escalated into stone-pelting, vandalism, and arson.

By 10 pm, the situation turned chaotic. Eyewitnesses reported stones flying in every direction, shattering windshields and littering the streets. Two cars were set on fire, while eight to nine others — including autorickshaws and parked vehicles — were vandalized. Roadside parking areas were left in ruins.
More than 200 police personnel were rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. Kolhapur SP assured residents that peace had been restored and urged citizens not to be misled by rumours. “The incident happened suddenly. Leaders of both groups have appealed for calm,” he said.
Authorities confirmed that the clash stemmed from a misunderstanding, and while investigations are underway, no arrests have yet been made.
