Waqf in Uttar Pradesh

More than 31,000 properties registered as Waqf in Uttar Pradesh have been removed from the union government’s Umeed portal after a large-scale verification exercise uncovered significant discrepancies and technical inconsistencies in the submitted records.

Officials said registrations of 31,328 Waqf properties have been cancelled so far following detailed scrutiny of documents linked to the properties. Of these, claims related to 31,192 properties were also rejected after verification found mismatches in land and ownership records.

The action is part of an ongoing statewide review of Waqf records, with authorities examining a total of 1,18,302 documented Waqf properties.

Officials said the cancellations were triggered after widespread irregularities surfaced during cross-checking of land and revenue records.

In several instances, the Khasra or plot numbers submitted on the portal did not match details available in official records maintained by the Waqf Board. Authorities also found discrepancies in the land area listed in revenue documents, raising questions over the accuracy of several registrations.

How the Umeed portal works

The Umeed portal, short for Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development, was launched by the Centre as part of a nationwide drive to digitise and geotag Waqf properties.

The platform is designed to create a centralised digital inventory of Waqf assets and improve transparency in their management. Under existing rules, all Waqf properties must be uploaded to the portal within six months of its launch.

The development comes amid an ongoing legal and political debate over the amended Waqf law and the mandatory registration process.

Recently, the Supreme Court declined to extend the six-month deadline for uploading property details to the portal, observing that affected parties could approach Waqf Tribunals individually in cases involving technical difficulties or documentation issues.

The Centre has maintained that the digitisation exercise is aimed at streamlining records and preventing misuse of Waqf properties.

With scrutiny continuing across districts, officials indicated that more properties could come under verification in the coming months, while disputed claims are expected to be referred to Waqf Tribunals for adjudication.
