26/11 accused extradited from US undergoes hernia surgery in Delhi, now recovering under high-risk custody.

Tahawwur Rana, accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, underwent hernia surgery at All India Institute of Medical Sciences on Wednesday. The 65-year-old, extradited from the US in 2025, is currently lodged in a high-security ward at Tihar Jail.
He was admitted on Monday and operated on the same morning. Officials said he is now recovering, adding that the procedure followed due court approval after a detailed medical assessment of his condition.

Hospital records show Rana made five visits to AIIMS in the past month before doctors scheduled the surgery. These included consultations on 31/03, 06/04, 07/04, 20/04 and 21/04.
Rana remains lodged in Jail 2, designated for high-risk inmates. He is transported under heavy guard by the Delhi Police’s judicial custody unit, with additional security deployed at the hospital. Personnel from the South district police are stationed outside his ward, working in coordination with prison and security officials.
Identified as inmate number 1784, Rana is housed in a segregated block with six other high-risk prisoners, including Mohammed Ahmed Zarar Siddibappa. Prison sources said each inmate is kept in a separate cell, with no interaction allowed and strict access controls in place.
A known associate of David Coleman Headley, Rana was extradited to India on April 10, 2025. Investigators allege he played a key role in facilitating reconnaissance and provided logistical support to those involved in the Mumbai attacks.
