Within hours of crossing over, the young leader loses nearly one million followers, signaling a visible shift in youth sentiment online.

A day after Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha stunned Delhi’s political circles by quitting the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the political fallout is now playing out in the digital arena — swiftly and publicly.
Within just 24 hours of his switch, Chadha’s Instagram following saw a steep decline, reports said. His follower count reportedly fell by nearly one million — from 14.6 million on April 25 to 13.3 million by the afternoon of April 26—reflecting what many see as a spontaneous, youth-driven backlash.

Chadha’s exit was not an isolated move. He crossed over along with six AAP Rajya Sabha MPs, dealing a significant blow to the party led by Arvind Kejriwal, which is now grappling with internal strain and questions over cohesion.
Though speculation around his departure had been building — especially after he was removed as AAP’s deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha weeks earlier — the intensity of the online reaction appears to have caught many by surprise.
Political observers point to a coordinated response among younger users. Anish Gawande, spokesperson for the NCP (SP), flagged what he described as a viral “Gen Z unfollow campaign.”
“The internet can make you a hero overnight. The internet can also bring you down to zero overnight,” he wrote, underscoring how quickly online sentiment can shift.
Scroll through Chadha’s recent posts, and the mood is unmistakable — comments urging others to unfollow, expressions of disappointment, and questions about his political choices dominate the conversation.
Political commentator Diksha Kandpal noted the scale of discontent, observing that many young users were actively encouraging others to disengage from his social media presence.
For years, Chadha had cultivated a strong connection with younger voters, positioning himself as a leader attuned to everyday concerns. He spoke on issues often overlooked in mainstream discourse—paternity leave, urban traffic chaos, telecom data caps, and even high food prices at airports.
His outreach went beyond rhetoric. In a widely discussed move, he once worked a shift as a delivery partner with Blinkit to better understand the challenges faced by gig workers. The gesture resonated widely and reinforced his image as accessible and grounded.
His advocacy also coincided with policy attention. When the Centre later nudged delivery platforms to move away from rigid 10-minute delivery targets, it added weight to his positioning as a responsive, issue-driven politician.
Even during internal setbacks—such as his removal from a key parliamentary role—he enjoyed visible online support. At one point, a viral Instagram reel even floated the idea of him launching a “Gen Z party,” capturing the extent of his appeal among younger audiences.
That narrative, however, appears to be changing. The sharp drop in followers suggests more than a routine fluctuation—it reflects a moment of recalibration in how a section of the public, particularly young voters, perceives him.
Adding to the conversation, senior AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj pointed out that only two posts referencing Prime Minister Narendra Modi remain on Chadha’s Instagram profile, both of which are appreciative in tone — fueling further debate over his political repositioning.
Whether Chadha — often seen as articulate, data-driven, and politically agile — can read the mood and rebuild his connection with the youth remains to be seen. For now, the numbers tell a story of admiration turning into hesitation, and support giving way to scrutiny — one unfollow at a time.
