The launch of the Jewar-based airport is set to ease pressure on Delhi’s IGI Airport, improve connectivity across NCR, and boost travel options for millions in eastern NCR and western Uttar Pradesh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the first phase of the Noida International Airport on March 28, marking a major milestone in India’s aviation and infrastructure development.
Located in Jewar in Uttar Pradesh’s Gautam Buddha Nagar district, the airport is being positioned as a second major aviation hub for the National Capital Region (NCR), complementing the existing Indira Gandhi International Airport. The move is expected to significantly ease congestion at IGI, which currently handles the bulk of air traffic in the region.

The inauguration of the airport is being seen as a strategic step toward expanding aviation capacity in one of India’s busiest travel corridors. Authorities say the new facility will not compete directly with IGI but will instead cater primarily to travellers from eastern NCR and western Uttar Pradesh, offering them a more accessible alternative.
For passengers, the development is expected to translate into shorter travel times to the airport, reduced congestion, and increased flight availability. Improved connectivity through highways and planned infrastructure projects is also likely to make the airport more accessible to a wider population across the NCR.
The airport is part of a broader plan to modernise India’s aviation infrastructure and accommodate growing passenger demand. In its initial phase, it is expected to handle millions of passengers annually, with further expansion planned in subsequent phases to significantly increase capacity.
Beyond aviation, the project is also expected to have a strong economic impact on the region. Experts believe the airport will drive growth in real estate, attract investment, and create employment opportunities in and around Noida and Greater Noida. The surrounding areas are already witnessing increased interest from developers and businesses anticipating improved connectivity.
Preparations for the inauguration are in their final stages, with extensive arrangements being made to manage traffic, security, and large public attendance expected at the event. Authorities have planned designated routes and parking facilities to ensure smooth movement on the day of the launch.
While the inauguration marks the formal opening of the airport, commercial flight operations are expected to begin shortly after, once all operational clearances and logistical arrangements are fully in place.
