Another assault case from West Bengal came to light where a nurse on duty was assaulted by a male patient at a government health center in Ilambazar, Birbhum district of West Bengal, on Aug 31 night.

This incident occurs amid nationwide protests over the Aug 9 rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

According to reports, while the nurse was administering saline to the patient, who was brought in on a stretcher with a high fever and accompanied by family members, he allegedly touched her inappropriately.

The nurse's police complaint also mentioned that the patient used offensive language towards her.

“The patient was brought in during the night shift with a fever complaint. As advised by the doctors, I was preparing to administer saline to him when he misbehaved. He touched me and used foul language. We feel unsafe working here due to the lack of proper security. How could a patient act in such a way?" she said.

Authorities at the health center quickly informed the police, who arrived and arrested the suspect.

In response to the Birbhum incident, Amit Malviya from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, sharing on X a list of four sexual assault cases, including the Birbhum incident, reported on the first day of September in West Bengal.

The BJP has been vocally protesting against Banerjee, who leads the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), over the RG Kar Medical College case and concerns about women's safety in the state.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is investigating the rape and murder of the doctor at RG Kar.
