The former US ambassador to the UN urges maintaining strong US–India ties to counter China, calling for direct engagement despite tensions over tariffs and Russian oil imports.

Former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has delivered a sharp warning to the Trump administration: alienating India amid ongoing tariff disputes and concerns over Russian oil imports would be a “strategic disaster.”
Writing in a Newsweek op-ed co-authored with Bill Drexel, Haley emphasized that a US–India partnership to counter China “should be a no-brainer.”

She stressed that India must not be treated as an adversary like China, noting that enabling their democratic rise serves US interests.
Haley highlighted India’s capacity to help the US diversify critical supply chains away from China and underscored India’s demographic and geopolitical advantages — including its expanding defense ties and strategic location disrupting China’s energy and trade corridors.
Haley warned that reversing two decades of progress in US–India relations amid rising Chinese assertiveness would backfire. She labeled the evolving diplomatic rift, inflamed by tariffs on Indian goods and penalties linked to its oil imports, as potentially catastrophic for America's strategic footing.
In addition to counsel for Washington, Haley directed a message to New Delhi — encouraging India to take President Trump’s concerns over Russian oil "seriously" and engage with the US to find mutually acceptable solutions.

She explained that navigating such complex issues requires hard dialogue without sacrificing shared strategic goals.
Haley’s remarks come at a delicate moment in bilateral relations. Earlier this month, the Trump administration imposed steep tariffs — first 25%, then an additional 25% tied to India’s Russian oil use — bringing total duties to 50%.
These sudden escalations have strained the US – India trade and diplomatic equation, raising concerns over the future of strategic cooperation.
