Security agencies are examining international connections after the arrest of US national Matthew VanDyke and six Ukrainians, accused of training armed groups and facilitating drone operations linked to insurgent networks near India’s northeastern borders.

The arrest of an American national along with six Ukrainian citizens has come under the scanner of central agencies, with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) probing alleged illegal cross-border movement and suspected activities in India’s sensitive northeast region.
Matthew VanDyke and six Ukrainian nationals were detained after they allegedly entered India on tourist visas and travelled to Mizoram. Officials suspect that the group subsequently crossed into Myanmar without obtaining the required permissions, a claim that is now under investigation.

The case has been registered under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), and officials said the probe is focused on establishing the purpose of their travel, the nature of their activities, and whether any Indian laws were violated.
Agencies have seized electronic devices and other materials, which are currently being examined to reconstruct movements and contacts.
Authorities have not publicly disclosed detailed findings on the alleged activities but confirmed that the matter involves security considerations given the location and nature of the suspected cross-border movement.
Mizoram shares a porous border with Myanmar, and the region has remained sensitive due to the presence of various ethnic armed groups across the border.
VanDyke, who identifies himself as a security analyst and filmmaker, has previously been associated with conflict zones abroad.
Officials are verifying his background as part of the ongoing investigation. No official statement has been made on the specific role of the Ukrainian nationals beyond their alleged involvement in the same movement.
The arrests have also led to diplomatic communication, with authorities in the US and Ukraine acknowledging the detention of their nationals. Officials said further details will emerge after interrogation and forensic examination of the seized material.
The investigation remains ongoing, with agencies working to determine the full sequence of events and any possible links or violations under Indian law.
