Aviation turbine fuel prices in Delhi briefly surged above ₹2 lakh per kilolitre before being reduced by half within hours, as the government stepped in to prevent a steep cost burden on domestic airlines.

Jet fuel prices for domestic flights were rolled back within hours on April 1 after a sudden and steep increase earlier in the day.
State-owned Indian Oil Corporation had initially doubled aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices in Delhi to around ₹2.07 lakh per kilolitre for April. However, the prices were later reduced to about ₹1.04 lakh per kilolitre following government intervention.

The abrupt revision came amid global energy market volatility linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has disrupted supply chains and pushed crude oil prices higher.
Officials indicated that the government moved quickly to shield domestic airlines from the impact of the spike, as a full implementation of the higher rates could have significantly increased operating costs for carriers already working on thin margins.
The brief price surge had raised concerns of a potential increase in airfares across India, with fuel accounting for a major share of airline expenses. Industry trends suggest that even moderate increases in ATF prices can translate into higher ticket prices for passengers.
Subsequent clarifications from authorities and industry reports suggested that the actual increase passed on to domestic airlines would be limited and staggered, ensuring that the burden remains manageable.
The development highlights the sensitivity of India’s aviation sector to global fuel price movements, particularly during periods of geopolitical instability, and underscores the government’s role in cushioning sudden shocks to the industry.
