The rash driving in a wrong directon led to the killing of two women in their early 20s, who were returning home on their scooter after participating in a Ganesh temple fair in Khajrana.
Indore Police on Sep 16 arrested the driver of a BMW car, who allegedly killed two young women in a hit-and-run on Sep 15 evening, while driving at high speed in the wrong direction to deliver a birthday cake to his friend.
The accused Gajendra Pratap Singh (28) had fled the scene with his car after causing the accident in Khajarana area, police said.
He is a native of Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior city and was living in Indore's Suncity town.
"Preliminary investigation reveals that the accused was in a hurry to deliver a cake for his friend’s birthday, which is why he drove in the wrong direction,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police Kundan Mandloi.
Singh works at a BPO in Indore and had bought the car second-hand a few days ago.
The incident happened when two young women – Lakshmi Tomar, 24, and Diksha Jadon 25 – were returning home on their scooter after participating in a Ganesh temple fair in Khajrana.
“At around 11.30 pm, a speeding BMW coming in the wrong direction rammed into the scooter and threw the two women onto the road, causing critical injuries to both,” Manoj Singh Sendhav, Khajrana police station in-charge told PTI.
“They were rushed to a nearby hospital where they succumbed to their injuries,” he added.
The victim Lakshmi Tomar who was working in Indore was the only earning member of her family since her father passed away last year, a family member was quoted as saying.
Another victim Jadon hailed from Gwalior and was working in a public sector bank in the city. Police have registered a case under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita against the accused.
