Indians’ safety, LPG supply top priorities: PM Modi in Lok Sabha on West Asia crisis

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 23 outlined India’s response to the ongoing West Asia conflict in the Lok Sabha, stressing that the safety of Indian nationals and continuity of essential supplies are the government’s highest priorities.

Addressing Parliament, Modi said around 3.75 lakh Indians have returned safely since the conflict began, including about 1,000 evacuated from Iran, many of them students. He added that Indian missions across Gulf countries are actively assisting citizens through helplines, control rooms, and on-ground support.

The Prime Minister noted that the government has engaged diplomatically with leaders in the region, receiving assurances regarding the safety of Indian nationals. With nearly one crore Indians living and working in the Gulf, he described their security as a “biggest priority.”

Highlighting economic concerns, Modi flagged disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, calling attacks on commercial shipping “not acceptable.” He said the government is closely monitoring maritime routes to ensure uninterrupted supply of crude oil, gas, and fertilisers to India.

On domestic impact, Modi assured that LPG supply has been prioritised and steps are being taken to maintain stable availability of petrol and diesel. He said India has diversified its energy imports, now sourcing from 41 countries, to reduce dependency risks amid the crisis.

The Prime Minister also sought to reassure farmers, stating that India has adequate food grain and fertiliser stocks, and that efforts are underway to shield agriculture from global disruptions.

Calling the West Asia situation “worrisome,” Modi said the conflict is affecting the global economy and emphasised the need for an early resolution through diplomatic means.

The address highlighted India’s dual approach of safeguarding its citizens abroad while ensuring economic stability at home amid one of the most volatile geopolitical crises in recent years.
