India sets sail towards global maritime leadership: PM Modi commissions Vizhinjam port

In a landmark moment for India's maritime ambitions, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2, officially commissioned the Vizhinjam International Sea Port in Kerala, declaring it a gateway to economic stability and global connectivity.

Located in the southern tip of the country near Thiruvananthapuram, the deepwater multipurpose seaport is poised to position India as a major player in international shipping lanes. The facility is the first of its kind in the country capable of handling some of the largest container ships in the world.

“This port is not just a physical structure; it’s a symbol of new-age development,” said Modi during the inauguration. Donning a hard hat and touring the expansive port grounds, Modi praised the project's potential to catalyze trade and regional development. “With the sea offering immense opportunities and the natural beauty of Kerala providing a unique backdrop, Vizhinjam represents the confluence of progress and potential,” he said.

Constructed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) in partnership with the government, the port comes at a cost of ₹8,867 crore and aims to transform India’s role in global cargo movement. After successful trials in July 2024, the port has already hosted over 285 vessels, including MSC Türkiye — one of the largest container carriers in the world.

The Prime Minister also made pointed political remarks at the event, noting the presence of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. “Today’s event will give sleepless nights to several people,” Modi quipped, in a veiled jab that sparked attention.

Set against the Arabian Sea, Vizhinjam’s strategic location near major international shipping lanes makes it a key node in global supply chains. Officials say the port’s deep draft and world-class infrastructure are already attracting major transshipment traffic previously routed through ports in Colombo, Singapore, and Dubai.

With its inauguration, India steps decisively into the global maritime spotlight — anchored in Kerala, but with implications that stretch far beyond its coastline.
