Engine fire on Delhi–Zurich flight forces emergency evacuation at IGI, 6 injured

A Zurich-bound SWISS flight was forced to abort takeoff at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport early April 26 after one of its engines failed and caught fire, leading to an emergency evacuation on the runway.

The incident involved flight LX147, an Airbus A330 operating from Delhi to Zurich. The aircraft was accelerating for takeoff when the crew detected an engine failure followed by a fire, prompting them to halt the takeoff and initiate evacuation procedures.

All passengers and crew were evacuated using emergency slides. At least six passengers sustained injuries during the evacuation and were taken to hospital for treatment.

Reports indicate the incident occurred around 1 am, with the aircraft carrying 232 passengers and 13 crew members, including infants, at the time.

Emergency services responded at the airport, and the situation was brought under control shortly after the evacuation. No fatalities have been reported.

The airline said it is aware of the incident and has initiated necessary steps, including assistance for affected passengers. Technical teams are expected to examine the aircraft to determine the cause of the engine failure.

In a statement, the airline said the crew aborted the takeoff and, after assessing the situation, opted for a precautionary evacuation.

The airline also said technical experts would be sent to New Delhi to inspect the aircraft and decide the next course of action.
