The Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) planned march towards Parliament drew thousands of supporters on Monday, with police erecting barricades and confrontations breaking out after authorities denied permission for the rally. The mobilisation came even as CJP leaders claimed the government had, for the first time since the protest began, reached out for talks with its representatives.

Thousands of students, youth and supporters gathered at Delhi's Jantar Mantar on July 20 for the Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) planned 'Chalo Sansad' march, transforming what began as a protest against alleged examination irregularities into one of the largest youth-led demonstrations in recent years.
The rally came two days after climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on a prolonged hunger strike in support of the movement, was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital following a deterioration in his health.

The Delhi Police had denied permission for the march to Parliament, citing security arrangements for the Monsoon Session. As protesters attempted to move beyond Jantar Mantar, heavy barricading led to confrontations between demonstrators and police personnel. Visuals from the protest showed scuffles and police using batons to disperse sections of the crowd, although Delhi Police denied allegations of a lathi-charge.
Despite Wangchuk's absence from the protest site, organisers said his hospitalisation had strengthened rather than weakened the movement.
According to organisers, the turnout exceeded expectations, with thousands assembling at Jantar Mantar carrying placards demanding accountability over alleged paper leaks and reforms in the education system. Protesters also reiterated their demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, which has remained at the centre of the CJP's campaign.

Protest enters a new phase
The demonstration marked a significant shift in the month-long agitation.
What initially began as a campaign centred on examination irregularities has increasingly evolved into a broader movement raising concerns over transparency, accountability and youth unemployment.
The CJP, which emerged after widespread anger over alleged examination paper leaks, has attracted support from students, civil society groups and opposition leaders, while gaining a substantial following on social media.
Wangchuk's removal from Jantar Mantar on July 18 added another dimension to the protests.
His supporters have alleged that he was forcibly removed from the protest site, while authorities have maintained that he was shifted to hospital on medical advice after his health deteriorated following more than three weeks of fasting. Since then, Wangchuk has described his stay at Safdarjung Hospital as "illegal detention" and sought permission to participate in the march.
Government opens door for dialogue
Even as demonstrations continued on the streets, signs of possible engagement emerged.
Ahead of the Parliament march, CJP leaders claimed the government had, for the first time since the protests began, reached out for discussions. Party spokesperson Saurav Das said he and fellow representative Ashutosh Ranka had been invited to meet Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda, describing it as the first formal outreach by the Centre since the movement started.
The development comes after weeks during which protest organisers repeatedly alleged that the government had declined to engage with their demands. Whether the dialogue results in any substantive breakthrough remains unclear.

A movement beyond one individual
Although Wangchuk has become the public face of the agitation through his hunger strike, organisers have consistently maintained that the movement extends beyond a single leader.
The protesters continue to demand action over alleged examination paper leaks, greater accountability in recruitment and entrance examinations, and systemic reforms in the education sector. They have also called for support for families affected by alleged examination-related distress and student suicides.
Monday's mobilisation demonstrated that the protest has retained momentum despite Wangchuk remaining in hospital.
As Parliament's Monsoon Session begins, the CJP's ability to draw thousands to the capital—and the government's decision to initiate talks while simultaneously restricting the march—suggest that the confrontation has entered a new phase, one that is likely to play out both on the streets and through negotiations in the days ahead.
