Central Bureau of Investigation teams have been deployed at Mumbai and Bengaluru airports to gather intelligence and work Directorate of Revenue Intelligence to uncover an international smuggling nexus exploiting security loopholes, officials said.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has launched a probe into organized gold smuggling networks operating through Indian airports, days after Kannada actor Ranya Rao was arrested with 14.2 kg of smuggled gold.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), which apprehended the actress at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport, is working closely with the CBI to dismantle the syndicate.
Officials confirmed on March 8 that two CBI teams have been deployed to Mumbai and Bengaluru airports to gather crucial intelligence and coordinate efforts with DRI investigators. The agencies are pursuing leads that could expose a wider nexus of international smugglers exploiting airport security loopholes.
DRI seeks custodial interrogation for deeper investigation
As part of the intensified probe, the DRI has sought Rao’s custodial interrogation, citing the need to confront her with digital forensic evidence retrieved from her mobile phone and laptop. The court has granted custody, emphasizing the necessity of examining her alleged links to the smuggling syndicate and potential breaches of airport protocols.
Rao, who was escorted to court by two DRI female officers, has denied any mistreatment during detention. The judge has directed authorities to ensure her safety, provide basic amenities, and allow her lawyer a 30-minute daily meeting in the presence of DRI officials.
Actor reveals mental trauma following arrest
Sources close to the investigation revealed that Rao has been struggling with severe emotional distress, frequently reliving the moment of her arrest. She has reportedly confided in her legal team about her inability to sleep and overwhelming regret over her alleged involvement in the smuggling operation.
The latest developments underscore the government's resolve to curb gold smuggling and unearth the larger syndicate operating behind the scenes. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities tighten surveillance at key entry points to prevent further illicit activities. (PTI)
