Late-night collision on Friar Gate leaves victims seriously hurt; police rule out ongoing threat, launch probe.

Several people were injured—some seriously—after a car rammed into pedestrians in the city centre of Derby on March 28 night, prompting a swift police response and the arrest of the driver.
The incident occurred on Friar Gate at around 9:30 pm, when a vehicle struck multiple pedestrians, triggering panic in the busy area. Emergency services rushed to the scene, treating the injured before transporting them to nearby hospitals for further care.

According to Derbyshire Police, officers quickly intercepted a black Suzuki Swift believed to be involved in the collision shortly after the incident. The driver, a man in his 30s, was arrested at the scene and remains in custody.
Police have launched an investigation and are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the vehicle prior to the crash. “Our investigation is in its early stages, but we want to hear from anyone who saw a black Suzuki Swift being driven in Derby around the time of the incident,” the force said.
Authorities have cordoned off Friar Gate—from the junction with Curzon Street and Cheapside to Ford Street—and warned that the road will remain closed for a considerable period. Motorists and pedestrians have been advised to avoid the area.
While describing the incident as deeply concerning, police sought to reassure residents, stating that there is no indication of any ongoing threat to the public.
