Election Commission's Data Highlights BJP's Dominance in Electoral Bond Collections
BJP Leads in Electoral Bond Redemptions, with Significant Collections Before Upcoming Elections
In the last five years, political parties have cashed in electoral bonds amounting to Rs 12,769 crore, with the BJP accounting for nearly half of this sum. Notably, most of the BJP's collection was amassed during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The party has already redeemed bonds worth Rs 202 crore in January of this year, signalling a head start in the fundraising race for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
According to the Election Commission's recent release, the BJP's total redemption of electoral bonds stands at Rs 6,060.52 crore, the highest among all political parties. This includes a substantial redemption during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and the state elections of November 2023 in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana.
A detailed look at the figures reveals that in April and May of 2019, the BJP redeemed Rs 1,056.86 crore and Rs 714.71 crore, respectively, which constitutes a third of their total redemptions from April 12, 2019, to January 24 of this year. The redemption amount saw a notable increase to Rs 702 crore during the November 2023 state elections, up from Rs 359.05 crore in October.
The BJP's redemption pattern shows consistent activity with a total of 8,633 bonds. There were three instances where the redemption amounts were minimal – Rs 3 crore in February 2020, Rs 1.50 crore in January 2021, and Rs 1.30 crore in December 2023. However, there were spikes in January 2022, with Rs 662.20 crore redeemed during the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur, and Goa, and again in November 2022, during the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh assembly elections.
The Congress party, ranking third in bond redemptions after the BJP and Trinamool Congress, has redeemed Rs 1,421.87 crore through 3,146 bonds from April 12, 2019, to January 22, 2024. The party's redemption surged to Rs 401.91 crore in October 2023, preceding the state elections, which was over threefold the amount redeemed before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections (Rs 118.56 crore in April 2019). In the latest tranche this January, the Congress redeemed Rs 35.9 crore, in contrast to the BJP's Rs 202 crore during the same period.
