In a thought-provoking post on social media, Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra reignited the conversation around India’s need for a globally competitive tech and manufacturing hub — comparable to China's high-tech powerhouse, Shenzhen.

“It's time for a Shenzhen equivalent city in India…” Mahindra wrote on X, referencing the Chinese metropolis hailed as the epicenter of technological innovation and manufacturing might. Shenzhen, located in Guangdong province and classified as an Alpha city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network, is globally renowned for its rapid economic ascent, robust infrastructure, and flourishing start-up ecosystem.

Mahindra’s statement underscores a vision for India to develop a dedicated city that mirrors Shenzhen’s model—blending industrial muscle with innovation-driven growth. His call comes at a time when India continues to ramp up efforts to become a global manufacturing hub through initiatives like “Make in India” and the push for Special Economic Zones (SEZs).

Netizens speak: Is Noida already there?

Mahindra’s proposal sparked a wave of online engagement, with suggestions pouring in from across the country. While some rallied for established tech hubs like Bengaluru and Pune, others championed emerging cities with untapped potential.

“Noida is the right choice,” one user argued. “It already boasts a vast electronics manufacturing ecosystem, component suppliers, and even a budding semiconductor research base.”

Others pointed to less conventional contenders. A user highlighted Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh for its coastal location, large workforce, and transformative ambitions. “It mirrors the rise of Shenzhen,” they wrote, adding that the town’s proximity to Amaravati and its adaptable labor force could lay the foundation for a new industrial era.

Bengaluru, India’s traditional tech nerve center, also received nods of approval. “It’s a strong contender with companies like Infosys and a rich STEM talent pool,” one user noted. “But to match Shenzhen’s $450 billion GDP, we need better SEZs, world-class infrastructure, and sharper focus on tech education.”

Another popular pick was Pune, praised for its thriving IT parks like Hinjewadi and a highly skilled talent base. “It’s ready to lead India’s tech-manufacturing leap,” a user declared.

Timing and Tennis: A Shenzhen spotlight

Mahindra’s remark came just two days after Shenzhen grabbed headlines for another reason—the city was named the new host of the Billie Jean King Cup finals. The International Tennis Federation announced that the premier women’s tennis event would be held in Shenzhen from September 16 to 21 this year, moving it up from its previously scheduled November slot. The rescheduling was made to align with the WTA Tour’s Asian swing.

The sporting spotlight only reinforces Shenzhen’s global appeal and strategic importance — a standard Mahindra and many netizens believe India can and must emulate.
