Amit Shah says no mercy for drug cartels after ₹88 crore drug haul in Imphal, Guwahati

A massive consignment of methamphetamine tablets worth 88 crore was seized and four members of an international drug cartel were arrested in Imphal and Guwahati zones, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said on March 16.

Shah also said the drug haul is a testament to the stellar performance of the bottom-to-top and top-to-bottom approach towards investigation and asserted that the Narendra Modi government's crackdown on drugs will continue.

"No mercy for drug cartels. Accelerating the Modi govt's march to build a drug-free Bharat, a massive consignment of methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 88 crore is seized, and 4 members of the international drug cartel are arrested in Imphal and Guwahati zones," he wrote on X.

The home minister expressed his heartfelt congratulations to the Narcotics Control Bureau for the success.

Meanwhile, two persons were also arrested March 16 with yaba tablets worth around 24 crore in Assam's Sribhumi district, located along the inter-state border with Mizoram, police said.

On the basis of a tip-off, a truck coming from Mizoram's Champhai district was intercepted at Puwamara bypass, Superintendent of Police Partha Protim Das said.

"On thorough search of the vehicle, police recovered 80,000 yaba tablets from a secret chamber in the truck," he told PTI.

Das said the arrested persons hail from the Cachar district in Barak valley of the state.

"We have initiated legal action to find out the forward and backward links in the drug cartel," he said.

Another senior officer said the total value of the seized drugs will be around 24 crore as per Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) standards.

Yaba, which is Thai for 'crazy medicine', is a mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine.
