Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid solemn tribute to the victims of the 1947 Partition, describing the event as a time of profound violence, exploitation, and displacement.

In a message shared on X (formerly Twitter), Shah said the day is meant to “express condolences” and ensure the nation never forgets its painful history.

Crucially, Shah also directed sharp criticism at the Congress party, asserting that it had “divided the nation into pieces” on that fateful day, thereby impeding Mother India’s pride.

The observance of August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day was initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2021, with the aim of honoring the struggles and resilience of those who endured the upheaval.

The commemoration seeks to remind citizens and future generations of the devastating human cost of the Partition and to reinforce national unity.

Other leaders joined Shah in paying respects. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan described August 14, 1947, as a day of "deep pain and immense loss," urging unity, compassion, and brotherhood in his tribute.

Additional voices, including Prime Minister Modi, recalled the extraordinary courage of people who rebuilt their lives despite unimaginable loss — calling it a "tragic chapter" of India’s history.

PM Modi honored the day with a poignant message via X (formerly Twitter), calling for remembrance of the upheaval and pain, while celebrating the “grit” and resilience of those who rebuilt their lives against unimaginable loss. He urged citizens to continue strengthening the bonds of harmony holding the nation together.

Partition Horrors Remembrance Day was initiated in 2021 when Modi first declared that August 14 be commemorated to honor Partition victims and to reinforce national unity and social harmony.

The 1947 Partition triggered the largest mass migration in humanity's history, uprooting over 15 million people and causing hundreds of thousands of casualties.

The violence was accompanied by unthinkable atrocities, entire communities were displaced, families broken, and lives lost amid chaos.
