Google is set to lay off more employees as it shifts resources toward artificial intelligence (AI), with job cuts impacting its People Operations and Cloud divisions. The move comes as the tech giant ramps up spending on AI development while seeking to streamline costs.

According to a report by CNBC, Google is introducing a voluntary exit program for US-based employees in its People Operations division, which handles human resources. Mid-to-senior-level staff (Levels 4 and 5) will have the option to leave in early March with severance packages, which include up to 14 weeks of salary plus an additional week for each year of service.

The restructuring aligns with Google’s broader financial strategy, spearheaded by Chief Financial Officer Anat Ashkenazi, who has emphasized cost-cutting despite the company’s heavy investment in AI infrastructure. Following a weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings report, Google remains focused on capitalizing on the growing demand for AI-powered products.

Beyond HR, Google’s Cloud division is also undergoing changes, with certain teams—particularly in operations support—being downsized or relocated to lower-cost markets like India and Mexico City. Despite the restructuring, Google Cloud remains one of the company’s fastest-growing segments, reporting a 30% revenue increase in Q4. However, stiff competition from Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure is forcing Google to optimize operations while maintaining a competitive edge.

While the company reassured employees that the layoffs would be limited, hiring will continue in key areas such as sales and engineering. Google also stated that affected employees will receive support, including the opportunity to apply for other roles within the company.
