The sensory room at Kempegowda International Airport provides a controlled environment tailored for passengers with conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has taken a groundbreaking step in inclusivity by introducing India’s first sensory room, designed to support neurodivergent passengers and individuals with sensory sensitivities. This pioneering facility offers a calming refuge for those who may find airports overwhelming due to bright lights, constant announcements, and bustling crowds.
Strategically located near the 080 International Lounge on Level 4 of Terminal 2, the sensory room provides a controlled environment tailored for passengers with conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Research in occupational therapy suggests that just 15–30 minutes in a sensory-friendly space can significantly reduce stress and improve overall travel experiences.
Developed in collaboration with Incluzza, an organization specializing in disability inclusion, the room is equipped with thoughtfully designed features, including:
A commitment to inclusivity
This initiative aligns with the airport’s broader mission to enhance accessibility for all travelers. In 2023, the Disability Inclusion Office by Incluzza, powered by EnAble India, was established at KIA as part of its long-term commitment to inclusion.
KIA Managing Director & CEO Hari Marar emphasized the airport’s dedication to fostering a welcoming environment:
"At BLR Airport, inclusivity is not just a feature—it’s a core value. From our biophilic, sustainable Terminal 2 to cutting-edge digital innovations, we are constantly striving to create a seamless, stress-free experience for every traveler. The sensory room is yet another step towards making our airport truly accessible to all.”
Dipesh Sutariya, Chairman & Managing Director of EnAble India, commended the initiative, calling it a milestone in accessibility:
“The Sensory Room is a testament to BIAL’s commitment to inclusion. It’s inspiring to see proactive, thoughtful action in making travel accessible for all. We hope this marks the beginning of similar initiatives across the country.”
With this first-of-its-kind sensory room, Bengaluru Airport is setting new benchmarks in passenger comfort, accessibility, and inclusivity — paving the way for a truly barrier-free travel experience in India.
