AIIMS doctor cautions against contaminated food and water amid rising GBS cases in Maharashtra

Over 110 cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) have been reported in Pune, with one suspected death in Solapur, Maharashtra.

Seven patients have been discharged, while at least 17 are on ventilators.

Amid growing concerns, a doctor has advised individuals to pay attention to their diet and highlighted certain foods that may be linked to this rare but treatable illness.

Dr Priyanka Sehrawat of AIIMS Delhi explained that one of the main causes of GBS is gastroenteritis, also warning about the risks of consuming contaminated food and water.

“Avoid eating out. Avoid contaminated food and water. Take care of your immunity as well,” Dr Sehrawat said, adding that foods like rice, cheese, and paneer should be consumed cautiously, as they are particularly susceptible to bacterial growth if mishandled or improperly stored.

She also recommended incorporating foods high in vitamin C to help strengthen immunity.

Signs of infection often precede Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) within six weeks.

These infections, which can include COVID-19, may lead to gastrointestinal and respiratory issues.

Zika is another infection known to cause GBS.

Symptoms of GBS include numbness, weakness, and paralysis, often starting with tingling in the hands and feet.

Walking, breathing, and facial movements may become difficult as the condition progresses. In severe cases, it can cause discomfort, eye problems, and issues with bladder or bowel control, making it a medical emergency requiring hospitalization.

“GBS is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s antibodies attack the nerves, weakening muscle strength. It typically begins with reduced strength in the legs, making it hard to wear slippers or lift objects. Patients may experience tingling sensations in their hands and legs,” said Dr Sehrawat.

“As the condition advances, it can affect the lungs, leading to the need for ventilatory support. The rate of progression varies for each patient, but in this outbreak, the deterioration has been alarmingly rapid, with some patients requiring ventilators within just 2-3 days,” she added.

“We’ve seen these cases before, but an outbreak is concerning. There’s no need to panic—just take care of yourself. Now you know how to address at least one cause,” she said, emphasizing that the illness is best treated within two weeks.
