Although, it did not break the record of winning the most Oscars, Christopher Nolan’s historical biopic about the “father of the atomic bomb” J. Robert Oppenheimer won 7 Oscars out of 13 nominations.
The 96th Annual Academy Awards took place in Los Angeles on Sunday, with last year's blockbuster "Oppenheimer" emerging as the biggest winner of the evening.
Although, it did not break the record of winning the most Oscars, Christopher Nolan’s historical biopic about the “father of the atomic bomb” J. Robert Oppenheimer won 7 out of 13 nominations. The award was ingenious director Nolan’s first out of eight nominations at Academy Awards.
His previous works include sci-fi films like Inception, Interstellar, and The Dark Knight Rises, as well as the World War II drama Dunkirk, for which he received a Best Director nomination.
Earlier, three films have received most Oscar wins of all time which are, "Ben-Hur" (1959), "Titanic" (1997) and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" (2003) with each of them getting 11 Academy Awards.
In his acceptance speech, Nolan said, “Movies are just a little bit over 100 years old. We don't know where this incredible journey is going from here. But to know that you think that I'm a meaningful part of it means the world to me.”
Oppenheimer received awards for Best Picture, Best Director for Nolan, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy as the titular character and Robert Downey Jr. received Best Supporting Actor for his turn as Oppenheimer’s government antagonist Lewis Strauss.
The blockbuster also won Oscars for Best Original Score, Best Editing and Best Cinematography. Other categories in which the film was nominated were Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Makeup & Hairstyling, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Sound and Best Supporting Actress for Emily Blunt.
