West Bengal makes Vande Mataram mandatory in schools

The West Bengal government has ordered that singing Vande Mataram will be compulsory in all schools across the state.

The instruction follows recent administrative changes after the new government assumed office, with formal directions already communicated to school heads.

The announcement was made by the Chief Minister while addressing students and the public following the declaration of Class 12 examination results. The implementation is expected to begin from May 18.

While speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister congratulated students who cleared the Higher Secondary examinations and urged them to pursue their future with confidence and values inspired by Indian thinkers.

“I want to congratulate all those who have passed class 12 exams. They should all move ahead in life inspired by the vision of Swami Vivekananda. I would like to send my best wishes to the future generation. From Monday, all schools should sing Vande Mataram. I shall reach the secretariat and issue an order,” the Chief Minister said.

As per the directive, school authorities across West Bengal have been informed about the new requirement. School heads are expected to ensure that the song is performed regularly starting Monday.

The decision represents a significant shift in school-level cultural practice following the recent political transition in the state.

Officials indicated that a formal notification will be issued by the state secretariat to finalize the implementation process.

The announcement has drawn attention due to the historical importance of Vande Mataram, which has long been associated with India’s freedom struggle and national identity.

The move is being viewed as both an administrative and cultural change in the education system.

Alongside the directive, the Chief Minister’s address placed strong emphasis on students who have recently completed their board examinations.

Referring to Swami Vivekananda’s teachings, students were encouraged to approach their future with discipline, determination, and confidence.

The message was presented as both a congratulatory note and a broader appeal aimed at guiding the younger generation.

For students returning to schools, the new week is expected to begin with the mandatory singing of Vande Mataram under the government’s instruction.
