Telangana to continue Intermediate admissions under existing system this year, merger plan put on hold

The Telangana government has decided to continue Intermediate admissions for the current academic year under the existing education structure, delaying the proposed merger of Intermediate education with the general school education system.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy issued directions to officials on May 10 to immediately begin the admission process to avoid inconvenience for students and parents ahead of the new academic session.

Admissions to continue under current structure

According to an official statement, the government decided not to implement any immediate structural changes because of limited time available for admissions and unresolved technical challenges linked to the proposed merger.

“In view of the availability of a limited time for admissions and various technical hurdles currently impeding the process of merger of Intermediate education with the general school education system, the chief minister instructed that the admission process be initiated immediately to ensure that students do not face challenges,” the release said.

The decision provides temporary relief to students awaiting clarity over the future of Intermediate education in the state.

Proposal to merge Intermediate system

The Telangana government had earlier considered merging Intermediate education with the broader school education framework as part of larger education reforms in the state.

The Telangana Education Commission had recommended scrapping the existing Intermediate system and replacing it with a Class 11 and Class 12 structure similar to the CBSE model.

Under the proposal, Intermediate education would become part of a unified school system instead of functioning as a separate stream after Class 10.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy directed officials to hold detailed consultations with stakeholders before taking any final decision on the proposed reforms.

The chief minister also suggested that the committee formed to prepare the Telangana Education Policy should examine the issue in detail and submit recommendations to the government.

The state government indicated that no immediate policy shift would be implemented without broader discussions involving educators, institutions, students, and other stakeholders.

The government said a final decision on the proposed merger of Intermediate education with the school system would be taken only after discussions in the Telangana Legislative Assembly.

“The chief minister said a final decision on the proposed merger would be taken only after holding a debate in the Legislative Assembly,” the release added.
