The move aims to promote physical fitness, holistic development, and sports participation among students while ensuring balanced growth alongside academic learning.

Tamil Nadu has made physical education classes compulsory for students of Classes 6 to 12 in all schools, including private institutions, from the current academic year, requiring schools to allocate dedicated time for sports and fitness activities.
The directive, issued by the School Education Department, is aimed at ensuring that students receive regular physical activity as part of their school education and are exposed to sports from an early stage.

According to education department officials, the move follows reports that some private schools did not conduct physical education classes during the previous academic year. Instead, periods meant for sports were allegedly used for additional academic instruction.
To enforce the policy, district physical education inspectors have been asked to monitor schools and report institutions that are not providing adequate sports facilities or are failing to make proper use of available playgrounds.
The government has also directed schools to encourage sports participation beyond regular class hours.
Institutions have been asked to organize coaching and training programs for students interested in pursuing sports, with the objective of identifying and nurturing talent at an early age.
As part of the initiative, education authorities will identify schools that have performed well in state and national sporting events. The government plans to study the practices adopted by these institutions and replicate successful models across the state.
Officials said the policy reflects a broader effort to place greater emphasis on physical fitness and holistic student development alongside academic learning.
The new guidelines, which take effect this academic year, require schools across Tamil Nadu to conduct regular physical education classes and ensure student participation in sports and fitness-related activities.
