Ladakh LG bats for mainstream subjects in monastic schools

Ladakh Lt Governor Kavinder Gupta has urged that monks in the Union Territory’s monastic institutions be given access to both religious studies and mainstream subjects to create a more inclusive education system.

Addressing members of the Ladakh Buddhist Association and Ladakh Gonpa Association in Leh on Aug 12, Gupta said that Gompa schools must have enough trained teachers so that young monks can receive quality learning.

He also said it's important to equip them with vocational skills to help them achieve self-reliance.

Gupta assured the delegation that the administration would establish proper recruitment rules to ensure only qualified educators are appointed, a move he said would strengthen education across Ladakh.

He reaffirmed his commitment to expanding renewable energy projects to support Ladakh’s goal of becoming carbon neutral.

In another meeting, UNESCO GRO–Geothermal Training Program fellow Kunzes Dolma briefed the Lt Governor on specialized courses in geothermal energy, gender equality, fisheries, and other subjects offered at Iceland’s GRO Centre under full sponsorship from the Icelandic government.

Reviewing government projects later in the day, Gupta instructed officials to ensure every rural household receives functional tap connections with a year-round potable water supply.

He called for introducing user fees for maintenance, penalizing non-payers, and involving communities to ensure the Jal Jeevan Mission’s success.

The Lt Governor also directed the removal of fake ration cards to stop ineligible beneficiaries from accessing subsidized food supplies and to prevent wastage of public resources.
