JNUSU election voter turnout at 73%, highest in last decade

JNUSU election voter turnout at 73%, highest in last decade

The much-awaited polling for JNU students’ union (JNUSU) election concluded on Friday with 73% students turning up to vote for their candidates.

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student’s union election was held after a gap of four years.

According to the final list of electorates released by the student election committee (EC), total of 7,751 voters were expected to cast their votes to elect the members of the central panel as well as the counsellors for the various schools, reported Hindustan Times.

The voter turnout was around 73% of the expected number, said Shailendra Kumar, chairperson of the election committee. The election was made inclusive for visually impaired students with the help of digital voting system.

In the last election in 2019, the voter turnout was around 69%.

This year, eight candidates contested for the post of president while 19 candidates contested for positions on the JNUSU central panel which includes president, vice-president, joint secretary and general secretary.
Additional 42 candidates contested for school counsellor roles.

The result of the JNUSU elections is scheduled to be declared on March 24.
