The initiative, approved by the Academic Council, aims to support orphaned children through full financial aid and ensure greater access to higher education starting from the 2025-26 academic session.
In a move aimed at expanding educational access, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (IPU) has announced the introduction of a new quota for orphaned children across its academic programs.
The decision, approved by the university’s Academic Council, will take effect from the 2025-26 academic session.
As part of the policy, one additional seat will be reserved in each school and program, with selected students receiving a 100% fee waiver under the university’s EWS scheme.
Vice Chancellor Padma Shri Prof (Dr) Mahesh Verma said, “The university aims to provide education to all, including orphan children who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic or some other reasons.”
He added that IPU will also work to extend financial support to these students through various government schemes.
With this initiative, IPU becomes one of the first universities in the country to implement a dedicated quota for orphaned students. Detailed guidelines regarding the quota will be made available on the university’s website.
At the same Academic Council meeting, members discussed a range of academic expansions, including a separate PhD program for working professionals and lateral entry into the MBA program in Fire and Industrial Safety.
The council also considered adding Spanish and other popular foreign languages to the university’s certificate course offerings.
Other key developments include the launch of a five-year BA-MA integrated philosophy program, four-year BEd special education courses in three new disciplines, and a post-MSc diploma in radiological physics.
Additionally, the university announced the creation of an “In-Situ Center for Indian Knowledge System and Technology Innovation” to promote traditional Indian knowledge systems.
The Narela campus is also set to become operational soon, offering an MSc in Microbiology along with various new certificate and diploma programs.
